Nieder- and Oberroßla used to be a district. The division took place only in the 12th century. Probably during this time the Wasserburg was built in Niederroßla. A nobleman Dietmar von Roßla was first mentioned in 1119. He is certainly also the builder of Wasserburg (Wikipedia).

Niederroßla Castle is located in a small park landscape on the Ilm. The beautiful moated castle was privately owned for years and fell into disrepair until 2009, when an association immediately began to renovate and restore the complex. Today Niederroßla Castle shines in new splendor and offers a small café and a guided tour during the warm months.

The castle was originally a moated castle surrounded by a 25m wide moat. It had an outer bailey and still has the highest keep in Germany today. A visit to the gem is worthwhile.
