This national cemetery, founded in 1923, is the largest in the Aisne department. It contains the remains of 10,601 French soldiers who died during the First World War, 3,076 of whom are in ossuaries. Most of them died in the fierce fighting south-west of Soissons. It also contains 555 French soldiers from the Second World War and 76 civilian victims, mainly from Soissons.
Noteworthy are the graves of soldiers executed during the First World War, including the six from Vingré. A Danish volunteer from the Foreign Legion is also buried here – a rarity in a French military necropolis.
Situated on the edge of the Bois Roger, the site covers 36,400 m². It is an impressive and serene place of remembrance, with rows of white crosses bearing witness to the human sacrifice of the Great War.
