The Cimetière militaire allemand de Sapignies was founded in 1916 and contains the graves of 1,550 German soldiers. Many of these soldiers died during the Battle of the Somme from July to November 1916 .
An interesting anecdote is that after the armistice in 1918, the bodies of soldiers who had been temporarily buried in Beaulencourt and Favreuil were transferred to Sapignies. During the interwar period, many trees were planted in the cemetery, and in 1977 the original wooden crosses were replaced by metal crosses with the names and dates of the soldiers .
