The town hall on the Großer Markt, built in the mid-15th century, is considered a symbol of the prosperous Hanseatic city of Wesel due to its facade. The building was destroyed during the Second World War. The citizens' initiative Historisches Rathaus Wesel e.V. has reconstructed the facade with donations.

The Gothic town hall on the Grosser Markt, built in the middle of the 15th century and expanded around 1698/1700, was destroyed in the Second World War. In 2011, the facade was reconstructed by a civic foundation, thus restoring a piece of the city's identity. The main construction period of the town hall was between 1455 and 1500. As a symbol of the wealthy Hanseatic city of Wesel, the decorative front was placed in front of two town houses. The filigree architectural style was rare and unusual - Flemish late Gothic is a symbol of artistic self-expression. After the almost complete destruction of old Wesel in mid-February 1945, reconstruction plans were put on hold for decades in favor of the entire new city. The symbol of civic self-government was in danger of being lost forever.

But since 2003, the citizens' initiative Historisches Rathaus Wesel e.V. has been collecting money for the reconstruction of the facade of the late Gothic-Flemish town hall. From 2010 to 2011, the Bürgerstiftung Historisches Rathaus Wesel reconstructed the outstanding building - a project that is unique in Germany.

This reconstruction interested many people not only in Wesel and the surrounding area, but also throughout Germany. Accordingly, donations came from all over the world.
