The Isar River floodplains, with their small bodies of water, sparsely vegetation-covered gravel banks in the floodplain, as well as willow thickets and riparian forests, offer diverse habitats for rare plants and animals. Their biodiversity is often compared to that of a tropical rainforest. Particularly significant are the so-called Brennen (burning meadows), gravel areas created by floodwaters, with their flower-rich grasslands. The most valuable floodplain areas are located in the nature reserve between Hangenham and Moosburg.
The well-known long-distance cycle path "Isarradweg" (Isar Cycle Path) runs right through the fascinating Isar floodplains.
