Kunōzan Tōsho-gu is a magnificent shrine above Shizuoka, dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was built in 1617 on Mount Kunō—even before the more famous Nikko Shrine—and is considered the oldest Tōsho-gu in Japan. The buildings are richly decorated, and the shrine is a national treasure. Accessible via 1,159 steps or by cable car, it offers magnificent views and a museum with Ieyasu's personal belongings.
