The Protestant church in Altenkirchen is one of the oldest churches in the West Palatinate region. A predecessor church was first mentioned on this site in 1290. Over the centuries, the present hall church was built in the Baroque style, with a tower top from 1818 – the so-called "Welschen Haube" (Welsh Hood).
During renovations, Roman spolia, inscriptions, and medieval stones were discovered, providing a deep insight into the region's past. The interior also impresses with Gothic tracery windows and a historic silent organ.
