“Hyehwamun is the north-east gate, one of the four small gates in the wall. It was originally called Honghwamun when it was built in 1396, but was renamed Hyehwamun in 1511. The gate pavilion was demolished in 1928, followed by Hongye (stone archway) in 1938. Hyehwamun was rebuilt at its present location in 1994, slightly further north from its original site.”

Built in 1396 during the Joseon Dynasty as part of the Seoul Fortress Wall. A wooden gatehouse was added in the 17th century.
