This castle ruins stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea on the east side of the city. After the arrival of the Normans in 1169 Earl Strongbow was granted the land along the east coast. He in turn granted Baron Maurice Fitzgerald these lands on the condition that he built castles for protection.
The Black Castle was constantly attacked by local chiefs, especially the O'Byrne and O'Toole clans. In 1301 they succeeded in completely destroying the castle.
