The strength stones were used to test the men's boating fitness. The stones weighed 23 kg, 54 kg, 200 kg, and 154 kg. Those who could only lift 23 kg were considered "weaklings," those who could lift 54 kg were considered "useful" and allowed on the boat. Those who could lift 100 kg were considered "half-strength," and those who could lift 154 kg were considered "really strong."
