The first cellars were built in the 12th and then in the 13th centuries, when local residents began to build them as protection against the Mongol army under the leadership of Khan Batu (Batukhan).
The total number of these cultural monuments is 36. There are 33 cellars in the village of Veľká Tŕňa, one cellar is located in the village of Viničky, and two are located in the village of Malá Tŕňa.
The area of the Tokaj Cellars in Veľká Tŕňa has been declared a nature reserve.
