The greylag goose is found almost exclusively in the area around Lake Neusiedl and the adjacent Seewinkel region in Burgenland. However, significant populations also exist along the Morava River, in the Waldviertel region, the northern Alpine foothills as far south as Upper Austria and Salzburg, southeastern Styria, and the Klagenfurt Basin.
In Austria, it predominantly inhabits larger ponds and lakes with a broad reed belt, where nests are also built.
Due to the significant increase in its population, the greylag goose is no longer considered endangered in Austria.
Geese are good flyers and often cover long distances. Greylag geese equipped with transmitters have been recorded flying at altitudes well over 1,000 m and reaching speeds of over 100 km/h.
