The square was one of the most important urban development projects in 18th-century Nancy. Its idea was conceived by Stanisław Leszczyński (in French: Stanislas), Duke of Lorraine and former King of Poland, to connect the 10th-century medieval town with the 16th-century new town. The square was named Place Royale in honor of Stanislas's son-in-law, Louis XV, to whom he also owed the Duchy of Lorraine.

Construction began in March 1752 and ended in November 1755. The square and its adjacent buildings were designed by the architect Emmanuel Héré. It is surrounded by intricate ironwork by Jean Lamour.

At the center of the square stood a cast-iron statue of Louis XV, which was removed during the French Revolution. In 1831, a statue of Stanislas was erected in its place. Since then, the square has been called "Place Stanislas." (Wikipedia)
