On September 2, 1849, Garibaldi embarked at 10 in the morning from the Cala Martina rock to head to Liguria, to Porto Venere.

Garibaldi left Rome on July 2, 1849, where he could not continue the defense of the Roman Republic proclaimed on February 9, 1849. His pregnant wife Anita was with him. Over 3,000 volunteers followed him.

He passed through Terni and entered Tuscany, where, however, he did not find welcome or help. Garibaldi then planned to reach Venice to help Guglielmo Pepe and the many patriots who were still fighting against the Austrian army.

He made a brief stop in San Marino and on August 1 he was in Cesenatico, then in Magnavacca (today called Porto Garibaldi).

Anita doesn't make it. She dies on August 4th. Garibaldi, with his heart full of tears, is forced to flee immediately, hunted by the Austrians.

From August 25th to 31st Garibaldi is helped by many Tuscan patriots to cross all of Tuscany through the provinces of Florence, Siena, and Piss, up to the Grosseto area.

An hour later they will be at the foot of the Massa Marittima hill, from where, assisted by volunteers from Scarlino and Massa, Garibaldi will arrive at Cala Martina to embark on the morning of September 2nd 1849.
