History of the Loren Railway
Across the Sea on the Tracks

The Loren Railway, which connects Dagebüll with the Hallig islands of Oland and Langeneß, is used for supply runs for the Hallig residents and for coastal protection. It is not used to transport guests. The exception is for guests vacationing on the Hallig islands. The Loren Railway began operation in 1927/1928 and was originally built to transport construction materials for strengthening the Hallig bases and the embankments. Magda Matthiesen, known as Captain Magda, was the most famous trolley driver. From 1945 to 1968, she used her sailing trolley to transport food, mail, and even vacationers to the Hallig islands of Oland and Langeneß. Today, the trolleys run on gasoline or diesel, and since 2021, there has even been an electric trolley.
