Schiavocampo intended to create a sculpture that transcends the eternal flow of time; he wanted to extract this eternal movement from a very specific direction: forward or backward. Once inside the curve, the flow of time becomes distorted and prevents us from understanding the direction or the destination; everything becomes abstract.
The barren place allows this state, because history has had no opportunity to pass visibly, thus the observer finds himself in a state of total unreality.
