The territory of the current park belonged to the former monastery Monnikhuizen. Around 1600 it was sold to Arnhem mayor Willem Huygens. His son Rutger expanded the estate to include the Mussenberg. In 1738 or 1739 it was bought by Pier Bout. In 1808 it came into the hands of Jan baron van Pallandt, lord of Walfort (1776-1844), who later also acquired the Rennenenk, Bekenkamp and Angerenstein estates. Jan van Pallandt had the park modernized according to the English landscape style. After his death in 1844 his third wife lived on the estate, then his son Frederik Carsilius baron van Pallandt (1810-1869) with his wife Françoise Jeannette van Herzeele (1819-1885) who opened the park to the public.
