At the end of the 19th century, tourism boomed on the Rhine and especially in Rüdesheim. One reason was the opening of the Niederwald Monument. The 2.3-kilometer-long Niederwaldbahn was built to transport tourists there. The cog railway there overcame a height difference of 223 meters. It began operations on May 30, 1884, but was then discontinued at the start of the Second World War in 1939. During an air raid on Rüdesheim on November 25, 1944, St. Catherine's Day, the railway was badly damaged and was not rebuilt afterwards. It was demolished in 1952. During this time, tourists were taken to the monument by bus; rebuilding the cog railway was deemed unprofitable. The idea of building a cheaper cable car came up as early as 1950. In the summer of 1953, businessmen, together with the town of Rüdesheim and the Rheingau district, founded the "Rüdesheim Cable Car Interest Group" in order to re-establish a connection to the Niederwald Monument. The new cable car was inaugurated at Easter 1954. The cost was 350,000 D-Marks. At that time, the gondolas hovered over the vines at a height of just seven meters, and the cable car had to stop operating again and again to allow the winegrowers' machines to pass. One supposed guest was Elvis Presley in his 1960 film G.I. Blues: As a G.I. in Germany, he arrives in Rüdesheim on a steamer and sings the song "Pocketful of Rainbows" on a trip to the Niederwald in gondola number 76 together with his film partner Juliet Prowse. Although the footage was just a photomontage and Presley never rode the cable car, the place has cult status among his fans. In its 50th anniversary year in 2004, the cable car welcomed its 30 millionth passenger. In 2005, the cable car was completely renovated. Up to 85 large, semi-enclosed gondolas with a retro look, which were specially made by a Rüdesheim company, now float at a height of 15 meters. One gondola can transport two adults with two children, as well as wheelchairs, bicycles, strollers or dogs. A wedding gondola with the number 100 can be ordered on request.

The cable car's gondolas float elegantly over the sun-drenched vineyards of Rüdesheim – at a height of about 15 meters, they glide almost silently through the vines.
In the background, the Rhine Valley stretches out, with its shimmering river, historic castles like Ehrenfels, and the striking Mouse Tower.
The town of Rüdesheim lies picturesquely on the banks, framed by vineyards and half-timbered houses – a scene like something out of a romantic painting.
On a clear day, the view extends as far as the estuary of the Nahe near Bingen and the heights of the Hunsrück.

Magnificent views, great paths through the vineyards.
