The Chemung Mine, located near the ghost town of Masonic, California, was established in 1909 after gold was discovered by Stephen Kavanagh, who named it after his hometown in Illinois. Despite producing over $1 million in gold during its 29 years of operation, the mine was overshadowed by nearby Bodie and plagued by legal and management issues.

The site included a mill, bunkhouse, and store, and used cyanide and flotation processes to extract gold. Abandoned in 1938, the ruins are now known for their haunting legends and striking, weathered remains overlooking Bridgeport Valley.
