The Serrabottini hill, located about 4 km south of Massa Marittima, represents one of the best preserved archaeological mining areas given the presence of numerous extraction wells and vast portions of land covered by landfill material, presumably attributable to the medieval era.
The work carried out in the area was mainly focused on the treatment of mixed sulphides and aimed, from ancient times until the 19th century, at the prevalent production of copper.
The main mixed sulphide mineralizations are set along the Serrabottini fault. These veins have an average strength of around 5 meters and a total extension of about 1,000 meters. The main mineralizations present blende, galena and chalcopyrite in carbonate and quartz gangue.

The area is characterized by the alternation of two main types of vegetation: wooded areas with thick undergrowth and tall trees, typical of the Mediterranean hinterland (holm oaks, oaks), and vast expanses covered with coarse material, of variable color, predominantly reddish, practically devoid of vegetation.
The investigation areas are, overall, easily accessible.
It is not always easy to identify the locations of the mining shafts, which are divided between those made safe and those identified (and registered), but without the safety structure; needless to say, those not yet identified are certainly still high in number. While those made safe are easily visible due to the covering structure that characterizes them, only a careful examination of the morphology of the terrain can the latter be located, which appear as depressions in the ground, covered by leaves.

Beautiful trails between Lake Accesa and Massa Marittima, pure fun.
