    St. Bartholomew's Church - Biblis 🚴‍♂️

The Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew is a listed church building in Biblis. Dating back to 836, it also marks the first documented mention, specifically in the Lorsch Codex, of both a settlement and a church on this site. The first church was likely a simple wooden structure, typical of religious architecture in rural areas. Starting in 1332, the old wooden church was replaced by a stone building. In 1560, Count Palatine and Elector Frederick I of the Palatinate had a new church built in Biblis. After the Thirty Years' War, when Biblis returned to the Electorate of Mainz in 1650 in the so-called Bergstrasse Subsidiary Regress, parts of the church – probably only the roof – were restored. In 1659, a gallery was added, and the ceiling was paneled with wood. On November 1, 1660, the church was rededicated and received the patronage of Saint Bartholomew. Towards the end of the 17th century, the church fell into severe disrepair, and only the most necessary repairs were completed until 1762. Over time, the building became too small due to the rapidly growing population. The initiative of the then pastor prompted the construction of the new parish church. On November 9, 1876, after approximately four years of construction, the twin-towered, neo-Romanesque-early Gothic "St. Bartholomew" Basilica with a transept was completed. It was modeled on the St. Elizabeth's Church in Marburg. 🚴‍♂️
