Old Town Hall (1834/38) + Pickle Woman - Biblis 🚴‍♂️

The Biblis town hall tradition dates back to 1592, from which a town hall is mentioned, but unfortunately no further documentation can be found. It wasn't until 1784 that we hear again about the town hall, which stood on the site of the "old" town hall. In 1785, the Starkenburg District Office reported to the Mainz Regional Council that the town hall in Biblis was dilapidated and in need of repair. In 1832 – under the Hesse-Darmstadt government – the project gained momentum. For a planned new town hall, the municipality acquired the site on the eastern side from Darmstädter Straße to Enggasse. In 1834, the foundation stone for the town hall was laid, and it was built according to plans by the master builder Moller from Darmstadt. The ground floor included a large room, a guardroom, the jail, and a restroom. The first floor housed the assembly hall, the tower room, the municipal council chamber, and the two-room apartment of the village schoolmaster. The natural building stones were brought by ship from Neckarsteinach to the so-called Wormser Fahrt (Worms Journey) and from there were transported to the construction site by wagon. The bricks were delivered from Gernsheim. In 1838, the wooden bell frame was added, housing the small bell that summoned the people to various events. Several administrative offices can still be found in the municipal town hall today.

The municipality of Biblis in the Ried region of southern Hesse was once known for its cucumber cultivation. To commemorate this era, a bronze statue stands in front of the old town hall: the cucumber woman, with a child and a basket full of cucumbers. 🚴‍♂️

Every year there is also a Gummern festival (normally) on the last weekend in June with the election of the pickle queen.
