"A place called Frensweiler (in dialect Fröschweiler), occasionally confused with Frutzweiler, lay in the district of Steinbach near the confluence of the Hodenbach and Steinbach rivers. This place was first mentioned in a document in 1313." The place must have disappeared "between 1477 and 1541. In addition to the root word 'Weiler' for a small rural settlement, the defining word refers to the Franconian personal name Frudin. Franzweiler was thus originally the hamlet of a Frudin."

This information panel tells the story of the long-vanished village of Frensweiler, first documented in 1313. Roman roads, traces of medieval settlements, and an enigmatic stone head – here you literally stand on centuries of history. Today, only maps, field names, and quiet places remind us of the vanished village.

💡 Tip: Read this panel at your leisure – it opens a window into a world you can barely recognize in the landscape.
