    The Timpaan.

    Wijnand Joseph Ackens ("Mediciene doctor") and his wife Louisa Pelser lived on the corner of Rosstraat and Kiebeukel at the end of the 19th century; they probably built this house around 1890. After Wijnand's death, his widow had the usufruct for some time, but later their children Dr. Joseph Ackens and his sister Marie Ackens came to live there through inheritance. Dr. Ackens (1857-1930) was a general practitioner in Gulpen for over 44 years.

    We continue his history here;

    After his death, he left a large legacy to the St. Jozefstichting, the foundation under which the St. Jozefgesticht (the retirement home) on Dorpstraat falls.

      Wijnand Joseph Ackens ("Mediciene doctor") and his wife Louisa Pelser lived on the corner of the Rosstraat and the Kiebeukel at the end of the 19th century. They bought the land as a "garden" in 1864 and probably built this house around 1890. After Wijnand's death, his widow had the usufruct for some time, but later their children Dr. Joseph Ackens and his sister Marie Ackens came to live there through inheritance.

      It was a spacious, beautiful, stately and somewhat classical building. In the middle of it, above the entrance with stairs, was a beautiful facade stone (tympanum) with a text by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, "If you want to multiply joy, you must share it".

      Dr. Ackens and his sister lived in the Rosstraat until May 1925.

      Let's follow the history of Dr. Ackens, Dr. Hugo Jozef Hubert Ackens (1857-1930) was a general practitioner in Gulpen for over 44 years. After his death he left a large legacy to the St. Jozefstichting, which included the then retirement home on the Dorpstraat. With this inheritance, a beautiful new and modern St. Joseph's institution with its own chapel, convent, four sick rooms and a doctor's office is being built. This is the building you are standing in front of (currently in use as a town hall) and that is also why the tympanum was replaced here.

      About the building and the tympanum:

      In 1925, the church council of the St. Petrus parish bought both houses from Ackens to serve, after renovation, as a rectory for pastor-dean Raymond Alfons Schroeder and chaplaincy (for the 1st chaplain) for "the new Until August 1976, this fulfilled the function of father resident of the rectory was dean Frans Henniss St. Petrus parish was connected. In 1976, after much preliminary work, the municipality decided to build a modern, multifunctional centre (including a meeting centre, post office and nursery) on that location and to take over the function of the then patronage at the Kiebeukel.

      Fortunately, it was considered appropriate to move the facade stone (Timpaan) to this new centre and even to link the name to it.

        continued:

        Until the end of 2017, "de Timpaan" was the multifunctional community center of Gulpen. During the demolition, the facade stone was carefully removed, restored and then stored.

        The vacant site of the community center was not rebuilt but was given a "green function"; the so-called Timpaan gardens. Originally, the facade stone was also intended to be part of this, but a number of practical problems prevented that

        The "Timpaan" was replaced and unveiled on October 31, 2023.

        Restoration:

        The facade stone was restored by Brother Leo Disch of the abbey in Mamelis and was made possible thanks to a donation from the Jales Alberts local history association

        Realization:

        The placement of the tympanum is an initiative of the Municipality of Gulpen-Wittem

        in collaboration with the Galopia Local History Association.
