The reason for the idea of an Iron Age homestead as an open-air museum was archaeological excavation finds of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in the "Grafhorn" corridor some 30 years ago, during which a historic pit house came to light. It was a deepened scaffolding house. Such pit houses served mainly as outbuildings, primarily for craft activities.
In addition, there are numerous finds from the immediate vicinity, which date back to the Iron Age, can be made available on site or are and are ideal as exhibits for illustrative purposes. These include chain links, knives, iron ax, slag pieces, charcoal, urns, pots with corpse fire, cover shells and Beigefäße. Even today, charcoal-kiln places in the fields are to be found as deep-black, round surfaces, but also grave mounds or rotten pits, in the closer environment.

The natural and cultural-historical educational center Grafhorn (NAKUBI) is an open-air museum between Burgdorf and Immensen. It is located in the middle of the forest. Here you can immerse yourself in the Stone Age and Middle Ages. There is a program that covers all cultural eras of prehistory and early history. With the Family Researchers Days there are also natural history offers for those who have always wanted to be naturalists. Various lecture series are offered at a current price of € 4.50 per lecture. Even so-called hands-on workshops and seminars are there at prices from 15 to 20 € per participant and offer, sometimes even cheaper. From time to time there are also flea markets there. Regular opening times are best requested by email at post@grafhorn.de

The Naturfreundehaus Grafhorn is always well suited to take a refreshing break here in summer in the garden restaurant during a bike ride or hike. In the garden there are coffee and cake as well as other soft drinks in the self-service. The decor is rather rustic. The Naturfreundehaus also includes the open-air museum Grafhorn with an Iron Age homestead. Please note opening times for the bistro as well as for the museum. Further information is available at grafhorn.de

You can visit the open air museum; the property is not huge, but there is a lot to discover.
