The knight's seat is surrounded by a wide moat, which is fed by the Rössingbach (formerly Dude) through an intact inlet and outlet system; it was only recently cleared of sludge. It is said that the castle used to have two moats and the pond in the park is still a remnant of this second moat. The trenches did not offer any protection against the firearms of the time, but this kept people from passing through and other undesirable guests.
