Weltenburg Monastery is a special place. Around the year 600, two Irish-Scottish wandering monks, Eustachius and Agilius of Luxeuil, recognized the energy of this place and founded the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria. 200 years later, Weltenburg became a Benedictine monastery. Documents show that beer production began in Weltenburg as early as 1050. The 975-year-old brewing tradition was celebrated with a pontifical mass celebrated by Abbot Thomas M. Freihart, followed by a reception in the monastery tavern. The festival beer, a classic Maibock, was also tapped there.
