At almost 500 years old, the Carl Pond is one of the oldest surviving mining ponds in the Upper Harz. This listed historic dam is still in a condition that closely resembles its original appearance.

The reservoir once served to supply water to an ore mine known as "Invincible Emperor Carl." This silver mine, which was established in the 16th century and operated under a different name until 1903, also gave the pond its name.
Of the ponds constructed in the old style, the Carl Pond is one of the few where the Striegelhaus (curving house) has been preserved to this day. This small house in the pond, connected to the dam by a bridge, once regulated the water flow. Until the beginning of the 18th century, all Upper Harz mining ponds had a device of this type.

West of the pond dam stands a 50-meter-long, detailed replica of a waterwheel with a field rod and pumping system. Such structures were used in many places in the Upper Harz region during the mining era to transmit power.

A first model based on a historical model was erected at this site in 1982. The current installation was built between 2022 and 2023.
The model of the wooden waterwheel is 4.5 meters high, making it half the size of one of the waterwheels once used in the mines.
