The approximately 2,000-year-old Roman road from Saulieu to Alésia runs 4 km straight through the forest, with an almost uniform gradient toward Saulieu. For most of it, it runs along a clearly visible 13.50 m wide embankment with drainage ditches on both sides—which is likely why it has survived to this day. The surface of the old road has been covered, and the path is very pleasant to walk in the shade of the forest. The intersection with the TGV Paris-Lyon line is exciting; ancient and contemporary meet at a single point.
