He worked as a conductor in the Carniola Regional Theater from September 1881 to April 1882. The conductor's salary in the Regional Theater was poor, but this small, but at the same time very resourceful institution was determined to stage some more ambitious and demanding works. So Mahler performed his first opera (Verdi's Troubadour) in Ljubljana in 1882. This was the first of ten operas he performed in Ljubljana. During his stay in Kranjska, Gustav Mahler also performed as a pianist at a concert by the Philharmonic Society, the predecessor of today's Slovenian Philharmonic.
