The Emschergenossenschaft has largely completed the construction of the Dortmund-Ellinghausen flood retention basin and the surrounding area – with only a few remaining works. For the new facility, covering an area of approximately 27 hectares – roughly the size of 38 football fields – approximately four-meter-deep excavations were carried out. The completed basins now have a capacity of 530,000 cubic meters and work in conjunction with the "Emscher-Auen" (Emscher floodplains) in Dortmund-Mengede/Castrop-Rauxel. The two plants form a joint system that provides a retention volume of more than 1.6 million cubic meters in the event of flooding and thus contributes significantly to flood safety for the cities located along the main course of the Emscher, from Dortmund/Castrop-Rauxel to Dinslaken/Voerde.

This viewpoint or rest stop is located slightly off the main trail and is shaded by trees in summer. It's a great place to observe the birds on the surface of the retention basin.
