The renaturation projects in the Körne area, including the Körne upper reaches, the Rüschebrinkgraben and the Kirchderner Graben in Dortmund, demonstrate the commitment to the ecological upgrading of urban watercourses. These measures are part of a larger project to convert the sewers formerly known as “Köttel Becken” into natural streams. By removing the concrete bed shells and redesigning the river beds, flatter and wider streams are created, which offer added value for both the local fauna and local recreation. The Lippeverband has freed these waters from wastewater by laying closed sewers. This now enables the ecological improvement of these areas, which has already been successfully implemented in other sections of the grains. For example, natural bank designs were created along the Körne, which promote biodiversity and offer citizens attractive recreational opportunities.More sophisticated renaturation measures are planned for the Kirchderner Graben, which can be implemented in certain places thanks to the acquisition of additional areas. This includes the design of meandering streams and the creation of paths alongside the water, which are intended to improve the accessibility and experience of the natural areas. With an investment volume of around 81 million euros for the new sewers and a further 18 million euros for the ecological improvement of the waters, the importance of preserving and enhancing natural habitats in urban areas is demonstrated. The work, which began in 2017 and should be completed in 2018, is an important contribution to the quality of life in the affected districts of Dortmund.
