The stone inscription reads: “HERE REST 4 SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEINERS WHO DIED ON 23.7.1850 IN THE BATTLE OF IDSTEDT”

After Prussia and the German Confederation withdrew from the Schleswig-Holstein War (1849-1851), the Schleswig-Holsteiners fought alone against Denmark.

In the Battle of Idstedt on 24 and 25 July 1850, the Schleswig-Holstein troops suffered a defeat. The Danish troops were able to bring all of Schleswig back under their control.

The battle is considered the bloodiest ever fought in Northern Europe: Of around 36,000 Danish and 26,000 Schleswig-Holstein soldiers, a total of 6,626 soldiers lost their lives.
