The castle was built at the bottom of the Ruhr Valley, directly at a ford of a later silted-up branch of the Ruhr. The noble Lords of Holtey are mentioned as early as 1221; the court, which emerged from the ancestral seat of Holtey Castle, is first mentioned in 1486.
