The mausoleum was built in 1867 in the Neo-Gothic style based on drawings by Crown Princess "Friedrich" (Victoria of Prussia, wife of Emperor Frederick III) and plans by J. Pavelt. Until its completion, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene in Vilmnitz served as the family burial ground of the von Putbus family. The first member of the family to be buried here was Wanda von Putbus, née Baroness von Veltheim-Wartensleben, wife of Wilhelm Malte II von Putbus, in 1868.
