It is located on the grounds of the former Minister Achenbach IV coal mine, named after the Prussian Minister of Trade, Heinrich von Achenbach.
After shaft 4 of the Minister Achenbach mine was decommissioned in 1990, RAG used the site for apprentice training until 1992.
In 1993, the conversion began, culminating in May 1995 with the installation of the Colani Egg on the headframe.
