The Renaissance building was built in 1562 by the stonemason and master builder Asmus. It served as the residence and office of the bailiff, making Steinau the judicial center of the Upper County of Hanau. Jacob Grimm was born in Hanau in 1785 and Wilhelm Grimm in 1786. They were six and five years old respectively when they moved to Steinau with their parents and three other brothers in 1791. Their father, Philipp Wilhelm Grimm, himself born in Steinau in 1751, had been transferred here. The bailiff's house is embedded in a spacious, picturesque courtyard surrounded by a wall. It was the official residence of the Grimm family. The Brothers Grimm spent a happy childhood here. Their only sister, Charlotte Amalie, was born here in 1793. Today, the former bailiff's house is the Brothers Grimm House Steinau Museum.

It was founded in 1998 jointly by the town of Steinau an der Straße and the International Brothers Grimm Society. The Brothers Grimm House Museum presents the life, work, and influence of the Brothers Grimm in a sensory way. Through interactive means, visitors can see, hear, and touch the fairy tales, immersing themselves in the colorful world of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's Children's and Household Tales.
