The old dam in Niederhausen has a somewhat shabby chic charm, a touch of age. The boards creak when you walk over them, but the view in both directions is beautiful: of the Nahe, dammed to form a small lake, and of the "Wildung" river that has emerged downstream, a diverse habitat for flora and fauna.

The dam in Niederhausen on the Nahe River is a striking engineering structure with both functional and aesthetic significance.

🏞️ Water surface and surroundings

The reservoir extends over a length of approximately 760 meters and forms the northeastern tip of the "Nahe Valley from Boos to Niederhausen" nature reserve. The water surface is surrounded by wooded hills and offers a picturesque view that is particularly popular with hikers and cyclists. In winter, when it is cold enough, the lake can be used for ice skating.
The dam was built between 1926 and 1928 by Wasserkraftwerke Niederhausen GmbH and diverts water into a 760-meter-long upper ditch, which feeds the neighboring hydroelectric power plant. The structure is a listed monument and is architecturally remarkable. It is a three-span weir located in the immediate vicinity of the former Niederhausen train station.
