The Elbe-Lübeck Canal (ELK) is a 61.55 km long federal waterway that was inaugurated in 1900 by Kaiser Wilhelm II as the 'Elbe-Trave Canal' - in 1936 it was renamed. The canal has seven locks and is a connection for inland and recreational shipping between the Elbe and the Baltic Sea. The responsibility for the ELK lies with the Waterways and Shipping Authority in Lauenburg.

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal was created from parts of the historic Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal, which was built by the people of Lübeck between 1391 and 1398 along the rivers Stecknitz and Delvenau. Some old stretches and locks of the 'predecessor' can still be seen on the left and right of today's Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The Stecknitz-Delvenau Canal had 17 locks over a length of 97 km. It was the first real watershed canal in Europe. The rivers Stecknitz and Delvenau have largely merged into the Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
