The Roman legionary, made of white sandstone and holding a flag, stands on a red sandstone pedestal.
However, with increasing car traffic in the early 1950s on Floriansplatz, which was used as a parking lot, the fountain became a hindrance, and so the figure (the pedestal was too dilapidated) was moved by a US Army crane to the perimeter wall of the Knights' Chapel in 1954.
In 1984/85, the statue returned to its original location, within a few meters of its original location, on a new pedestal modeled on the old one.
