From the 1414 meter high Belchen you can in good weather conditions the Alps from the Zugspitze to the Mont Blanc overlook. The name of the mountain comes from the Celtic and means "the radiant one". In addition to the Black Forest Belchen there are four other mountains that bear the same name: the Alsatian Belchen (Ballon d'Alsace), the Little Belchen (Petit Balloon) and the Great Belchen (Grand Ballon) in France and the Jurabelchen (Belchenflue) in Switzerland. In Celtic times these mountains served the Druids as landmarks for the rising of the stars on the calendrical shooting days.
