At this point of the Rehberger ditch you have a typical example of a Wollsack weathering.

The Wollsack weathering is a particular manifestation of the weathering of rocks. Through the interaction of physical and chemical processes, edge-rounded rock blocks are formed during the weathering of the wool sack, which are stacked on top of each other like pillows, mattresses or just like woolen sacks.

As far as they were able, the miners were able to get the construction material they needed for constructions of any kind. Even today, therefore, one can clearly see old quarries from the construction phases in the landscape at many places in the Harz.

A particularly striking example of this is the sand pit on Rehberger Graben not far from the confluence of the Rehbach. With the fine granite sand obtained here, the workers sealed the joints between the stones.

The sand is a weathering product of granite in the course of underground chemical-mechanical Wollsack weathering. This raw material, which thus developed from solid magmatic plutonic rock, especially in the Tertiary era, proved to be a durable and effective sealing material.
