After the Basel earthquake of 1356, the Goldau landslide of September 2, 1806, is considered the second-largest natural disaster in historical times. The resulting pioneering areas were gradually colonized by plants and animals. A rich mosaic of dry, humid, open, and wooded habitats developed. These habitats form the basis for exceptional biodiversity. The area is particularly known for its orchid populations. However, the occurrence of rare insects is at least as significant.

The landslide event of 1806 is the starting point for the development of a diverse natural and cultural landscape. As a protected landscape (BLN), as a moorland, as a dry site, and as an amphibian habitat, the area has four national significances.

In the area of the erosion toward Gnipen, extensive dry habitats with species-rich pioneer forests exist. Numerous species are endangered throughout Switzerland, but have large populations in the catchment area of the landslide. The area is known for its presence of 31 different orchids, half of all species found in Central Europe.

Considering the threat, the fauna is particularly valuable, especially butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, and amphibians.

Help preserve these exceptional habitats with their endangered species by taking everything home.
