The 20-kilometer climb to the resort of Melchsee-Frutt is divided into two sections. From Kerns, you first cycle into the Melchtal valley, where the route continues either flat or gently uphill for a while to Stöckalp.
The section of road begins at the huge parking lot, which is only accessible to cars in one direction: uphill on even hours, downhill on odd hours. If you're on a bike, the downhill rule applies, but not uphill.
