Castilleja del Campo must have been populated since Roman times. At least, that's what historians deduce from the study of the numerous remains found belonging to that culture, including tombs, mosaics decorated with geometric motifs, and abundant examples of "terra sigilata," dating from the reign of Emperor Claudius to that of Hadrian.
After the Muslim invasion, during the conquest of the Roman province of Baetica (711-713), this nucleus was reduced to a hamlet called "Albençameit," where, due to its strategic importance, a military detachment was stationed to guard the Roman road that crossed the area.
In the 9th century, the Normans attacked and sacked Seville. They arrived via the Guadalquivir, occupying various villages and hamlets, including the ancient Castilleja del Campo, which was fortified in anticipation of possible attacks once the Muslims occupied the area. Towards the 13th century, the victory of the Christian troops over the Muslims took place and from this moment on, Castilleja del Campo, now officially belonging to the Campo de Texada, began a period of growth that would lead it to dispute the primacy of the region with Sanlúcar al Mayor.
