Built in 1907, the building was primarily designed as a theater. The first events were variety shows and film screenings, but it soon became clear that these alone would not be enough to finance the Empire Theatre. In its heyday, it was considered a first-class theater, but time was not kind, and the Empire Theatre sadly closed and ceased operations in the 1970s.
