Kimmeridge Ledges are a distinctive geological feature located on the Isle of Purbeck, part of the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, England. They are essentially layers of Kimmeridge clay that extend out into the sea, particularly noticeable at low tide.
The ledges are part of the world-renowned Kimmeridge Clay Formation, which gives its name to the Kimmeridgian stage of the Late Jurassic period (approximately 157.3 to 152.1 million years ago). This formation is highly significant geologically, serving as one of the primary source rocks for hydrocarbons found in the UK's North Sea oil reserves.
