The Bahia Honda Rail Bridge, originally part of the Overseas Railway, opened in 1912. It is a remarkable piece of history, initially connecting Bahia Honda Key with Spanish Harbor Key. It was acquired by the state of Florida after the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and transformed into a highway for automobiles in 1938. The four-lane bridge you're standing on was opened in 1972, allowing for safer travel. Despite its age and disrepair, the remaining sections of the original bridge serve as a reminder of its past. The easternmost section remains open to pedestrians and is maintained by Bahia Honda State Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding area.
