Baron Pierre Chazal (1808-1892) was a high-ranking Belgian army officer and Minister of War from 1847 to 1850 and from 1859 to 1866. He was also the great founder of the Camp of Beverlo: the barracks and training grounds of the Belgian army were built in 1835 to defend against the Netherlands. In 1830, Chazal played an active role in the Belgian uprising and independence in 1830, which gave him a brilliant career in the Belgian army and in politics. He became a confidant and Wing Adjutant of King Leopold I. Chazal was born in France but obtained Belgian nationality in 1844. In 1857, he was admitted to the Belgian hereditary nobility, with the title of baron for him and his sons. This enormous stately statue was unveiled in 1908; it shows Chazal standing upright with an officer's cloak, leaning on his sword. On the pedestal you see a lion with a flag, oak branches and a rifle; three half-raised bronzes depict scenes from his life.
