More than 180 years ago, on January 25, 1833, Joseph Baron von Mellin stipulated in his will that his assets would be transferred to a foundation to ensure the welfare of children. This was an unusually forward-looking and social approach for the time, from a well-off man with a social conscience and empathy. The Baron wrote in his will: "I want a boarding house to be established on my estate in Uffeln near Werl for poor boys, orphans, or those whose parents are unable to support them. The boys should be well cared for, but without excess, and more emphasis should be placed on this and on a suitable, adequate education for the pupils than on an excessive number of them."
